Fresh start effect

The fresh start effect is one's tendency to pursue new goals following a temporal landmark, such as a holiday or one's birthday. One explanation of this effect is that temporal landmarks act as a psychological separation between one's past and current self, motivating people to pursue their goals despite previous failures. An example of this phenomenon is the popularity of New Year's resolutions.
