Uncertainty avoidance

Dealing with uncertain outcomes is a key challenge for behavior and decision-making. Even inadvertently, we are constantly faced with choices that may lead to uncertain outcomes. For example, deciding to play the lottery, taking a new commute route to avoid traffic or going on a first date. Foundational research showed that we prefer certain options when dealing with gains, but are more likely to choose uncertain options to prevent a loss.
