What-the-hell effect

The what-the-hell effect refers to the cycle of indulgence, regret, and concession. This effect describes the tendency for people to act in ways that would not help them achieve a goal once they already blew their chances of achieving it. For example, if someone was attempting to cut out sugar, but ate a cookie, they might rationalize eating additional cookies since they have already eliminated the chance of achieving their goal.
